What is your website resolution?

I am thinking about change the resolution from 800x600 to 1024 x 768.

How do you think about this?Also,what is your website resolutions?

If you design a fluid (variable width) layout, it should look okay even for 800x600 users, but if you choose to do a fixed layour, you should use 800px (or less) if you're targetting 800x600 (only 1% or less of the total) users, or 1004 for 1024x768 and up.

I use a fixed width set to 800px.

This has nothing to do with what size screens most people have. It's simply a comfortable width. A variable width site may make sense for certain uses, especially where the middle of the site can use more space for showing images or lots of text and where both left and right sideboxes are in use, but in my sites I don't use the right column, so the middle content area has enough room.

I assume people with larger screens and a wide default browser window are used to seeing narrow sites floating in the middle of their browsers. Or they do as I do and set the browser window to about 1000px wide so they can see other windows in other applications simultaneously.

One thing I don't do is assume that people who visit my sites to buy greeting cards are seeing what I see. I have a powerful development machine, with a large high-res monitor. Most home users don't have machines like this. So I test in a variety of browsers, in Mac OS X and Win XP, and at various screen sizes (using the Resize Window tool in Firefox). That's only wise.

I would have to agree with Rob on this one. As a rule of thumb 800x600 is a standard that has been with us since the Ark, but then you have to fit the site layout to the space that is available, and also fit it to column use, hence variable width layout. Either way, the content still needs to fit in 800x600 for those with lower resolution cards, although I would say that the number of users with low resolution cards is getting lower but negate them as they are that way for a reason.

When I think of resolution I think of dpi not the size of the image.

hmmm ... i think you got that all mixed up. they are taking about screen resolution not pixel optimizations.

just to clear some things up on screen resolutions ... an 800x600 screen should not use 800px, this will lead to some unwanted side scrolling on some browsers. the maximum viewable area for a targeted 800x600 screeen resolution is 760x420px, on a 1024x768 screen its 955x600px.
