How can I NOT require date of birth for new accounts?

How can I NOT require date of birth for new accounts? Currently, when someone tries to create a new account on our website, the website asks for date of birth and it's even a required field!!! People don't want to give their age--that's almost as bad as asking for social security number. And it certainly should be REQUIRED?!? How can I turn that feature off? I hope it's possible to turn it off. Please help. All feedback is greatly appreciated.

Some sites require a date of birth due to the content of the site.

Also, under US law, minors cannot enter into a contract and buying merchandise from a website could be considered a contract between buyer and seller.
