Do I have to use tables?

I am editing the tpl_main_page.php file and see that it uses a table structure. Is it possible to remove that and replace it with a DIV tag? Why are tables even used when everything else is CSS driven?

Because (when the current structure was developed a year or two ago) there was not a robust (i.e. fool-proof) enough method of building a 100% tableless dynamic PHP-generated page structure (as opposed to a static HTML-generated page).

Some people have managed to make their Zen Carts totally tableless, and acknowledged that it was very difficult. An upcoming version will reportedly be 100% tableless in its layout (aside from tabular data).
