Streamline.net and .htaccess

Hey

After installing my cart my pages will not display correctly unless I re-name the htaccess files. I have searched these forums and found that other people using streamline.net are having the same problem, none of them as far as I can tell have found a solution other than re-naming the htaccess files.

My question is firstly, if someone is with Streamline has overcome this problem I would love to know how.

And secondly, is renaming the .htaccess files a big no no?

fashhosts / ukreg do the same thing, they require the htaccess file in the includes folder and admin/includes folder to be removed. i just renamed these to access and that fixes fasthost, how ever i did move over to camalot as they are zencart cert hosts and they have helped me out support wise and always help out as they know zencart inside out.

have a look at them they are very reasonale spesh with the pound being strong.

steamline are very cheap looking at there prices but i always think you get what you pay for

Does re-naming open up any security issues? TBH we have only just signed up for Streamline for like £200 on a bulk account and really cannot afford to move right now so if poss would love to stay where we are :(

i pay camelot $199 which is £79 for a years hosting, including installation of zen and shared ssl, for you own ssl starts at $69 which is about £25 for a year and other extras like dedicated ip for certain payment requirments are only a couple of dollas as well.

i would consider moving to camelot, they will even move your store from your old server to their for FREE

both my site listed below are not even using 10% of the storage space but i went for the larger scale as for £10 exta ya get a hell of a lot more bandwidth.

Apologies, Streamline is only £70 per year + £25 for shared SSL but we have signed up for 2 years bringing it closer to £200.

I did check out Camelot but again we cannot afford to move right now :(

I have the same problem 2. They also now want another £25 For SSL yet more money.

Yea, we paid for the extra SSL but fair enough I spose. Have you got a working site atm Damien, or are you waiting/praying for a solution? :D

Thats looking great Damien. I am currently playing with Oscommerce until I can find a solution for Zen Cart, but I dont like OSC too much :?

If you password protect your /carttest folder via the Streamline.net DCP the htaccess files wont mess up the look of your site. Obviously passwording your website is of no use at all! lol

I have just spent last couple of hours looking for a solution and have drawn a blank. Basically it looks like streamline are using an older version of apache server that doesnt support the file exclude command in htaccess (I think).

I am going to risk it, I dont think there is too much risk disabling the file, the guys here are not going to commit to saying this because they do not know how streamline have configured their server. I dont think there is any other option asides moving host.

Let me know if you hear anything and I will let you know if I do

I think we're going to use Oscommerce instead as the htaccess file must be there for a reason so I am not comfortable re-naming it unless someone in the know says too :(

osc needs more modding to run on most servers as they need globles turned on which most servers turn off for security reasons. zen-cant dont need them on.

cant you cancle steamline??? most hosts have a guarantee.

you searched for htaccess, also do a search for fasthosts as well as they have the same problem. the htaccess file just stopps access to certain files. as long as you have the site secure using server password popups then you should be fine.

whats streamlines SSL like??? shared or do you own it?? as some servers with shared SSL you will also have trouble. fasthost have shared sll and zencart wont work on there or osc so i would check this before going ahead as if they have a problem with htaccess they might have the same problem with ssl.

We have shared SSL with streamline but havent go so far as to test it yet.

We have server password popups on the shop/admin folder but we cant have it on the shop/includes folder can we?

Htaccess files are for addded security and are also used to add commands for changing php configuration adding url rewrite rules,

and just to let you know OSC SHOULD be using htaccess files as well, but They are 4+ years behind in development,
the current osc code is where ZC started almost 4 years ago

The ms3 was due out in early 2003

Just to let you know I have decided to move away from Streamline - decided to cut my losses and move to Camelot.

I must say it took me ages to set my original site up with streamline with loads of faffing about and never being sure it would work properly. Within a few hours of switching to Camelot the site is up and running and I havent had to lift a finger.

The control panel for the hosting is the best I have ever seen and they replied to two help messages yesterday afternoon within 30 mins. (there may be a delay in the morning due to time difference)

I will now go and install my template and start configuring the site. Take my advice and cut your losses, I know it is hard to swallow but how much time will you waste trying to make it work when you could be earning money from your website sooner rather than later.

PS what is your URL, what do you sell?

I am doing this website for a client it is my first e-commerce website so it is a good job my client is a friend as well, I wouldnt normally do e-commerce as my bag is mainly internet marketing!
