How can I check "Subscribe to Our Newsletter" by default?

How can I check "Subscribe to Our Newsletter" by default? When visitors create an account for the first time, I'd like "Subscribe to Our Newsletter" checked by default. Is this possible? If so, how? Thank you in advance for any helpful information.

admin > config > customer details > Show Newsletter Checkbox > set to 2

I would actually like to remove the references to newsletter subscribe on the login page altogether. Although I would still automatically have every new account subscribed to HTML.

I know there will be some readers that will say don't do it, it is immoral, evil, etc. However I want every new customer to automatically be subscribed so that I get the opportunity to send them at least one newsletter. Hopefully this will impress them enough that they won't unsubscribe.

However they will still be able to unscubsribe after the initial signup.

How can I accomplish this. If it makes and difference I am already using the newsletter subscription manger mod as well.

I believe in some countries it may be illegal to automatically subscribe a new customer to your newsletter without a prior opt-out feature.

My understanding is in Australia is any customer/ potential customer that you have a relationship with, ie they have signed up, bought, phoned and given details, you then can market to them and it is not considered spam.

However you do still have to clearly give them the option of Opt-Out on any furhter contact that you have with them.

Thats what I am looking to do, If they have signed up, created an account, or bought something we have a relationship with them. I think that it is quite reasonable to make contact with my customer in any way, as often as I like unless/until they ask me to stop.

You can just comment out the newsletter frameset at the bottom of tpl_modules_create_account.php i imagine.
