Limit sales to Certain Countries

Is there a way to limit sales of downloadable goods to customers only from the USA and Canada. One of my clients has obtained licensing for a product that one of the restrictions is to sell it only to customers in in the USA and Canada.

Also, how would this affect other products on the site?

If anyone knows how I can do this I would greatly appreciate it.

It may be worth taking a look at this post, which is essentially the saem thing:

With downloads, there is more to consider, like where the customer is when they download. For example, I have plenty of contacts to the US, who could purchase a product, and then email me the link, so I can still download it in the UK. It all depends on how strict you want to make your security......

Why don't you just drop all but Canada & US from the countries table? In 1.3.8 you can also eliminate non continental US states.
Hope that's what you had in mind.

Re: Limit sales to Certain Countries

I think the original problem is that the client wants to sell some products worldwide, and then certain products to only a select number of countries, or at least that was my interpretation.

If you only want to sell to one area, rather than removing countries, you could just set up a zone, such as US & Canada, and then set all your shipping methods to only ship to this area. That way, customers from outside the US can still order the products, but have them delivered to a US address. This is useful for Gift Baskets etc, where the customer who is buying is based outside the delivery country.

Re: Limit sales to Certain Countries

I was thinking that setting up a zone might do the trick as far as that goes.

All products at this site are downloadable, it is possible she may want to send cds at some point, but the thought of weeding out customers from anywhere but the US and Canada is simply not an option as this would be more of a headache than it's worth.

If I setup a zone, would that eliminate any customers who are not in the zone from purchasing.

I realize that there are people who could have others buy for them, but if setting up a zone would be an option I can use at least for now, then I would be willing to try that.
