How do I exclude some products from showing up in New Products listing?

Hi! I am not sure whether this would work. Any ideas?

I want to keep the 'new products for the current month' and 'Bestseller' showing on my website frontpage. But I want to exclude some items from showing up in these listings? How do I do that? The reason is that I have multiple gift certificates for sale, in different face values. But they are essentially the same thing. I don't want all of them to show up at the same time to bother customers. Any ideas? Thanks!

You would need to change the products_date_added to older than the limit on your New Product definition in the Configuration ... Maximum Values ...

New Product Listing - Limited to ...
Limit the New Product Listing to
0= All Products
1= Current Month
7= 7 Days
14= 14 Days
30= 30 Days
60= 60 Days
90= 90 Days
120= 120 Days

Re: How do I exclude some products from showing up in New Products listing?

I need to exclude a whole categorie from showing in the New Products on the front page. Is the above fix the only way I can do this as I have over 60 items I would need to change?

Re: How do I exclude some products from showing up in New Products listing?

IF the master_categories_id is the same on all 60 products, then you could do a global replace on the products_date_added to be older so that they are not included in the mix ...

Otherwise, you would need to customize the code to ignore products where master_categories_id = 1313 or what have you ...

Re: How do I exclude some products from showing up in New Products listing?

Oh my. I am sorry Ajeh - but that does not make much sense to me. I have only been using Zen for a couple of months and have no prior experience with css and php.

So how do I do a global replace? As all the items I want excluded from the front page New products for ** are all in the Adult Products categorie.

Indeed. I have the same exact problem now. I read Linda's tip and I was able to change the "Limit New Products Listing to" to 7, but for the life of me I can't find where that "products_date_added" parameter is.

It's not the "Date Available" field in the product's main definition page, is it?

I tried to see if changing it would do the trick, but it doesn't.

I would appreciate any tip in this matter.

Thanks,
Daniel

It's a raw data field directly in the products table of your MySQL database ... a place one you probably don't want to go if you're not familiar with MySQL and databases.
There is no admin-area facility for editing the products_date_added field, as it's not intended to be changed in normal circumstances.

Thank you for this information - it is a great time saver.

I am familiar with databases and SQL (not so much in MySQL details but the principles are similar). However, I believe that in order to maintain future compatibility (e.g. in case of an upgrade), I should avoid any hacking not specifically intended by the developer(s) of a software product.

I guess that my only recourse is to turn off the "New Products For This Month" box completely. :(

Re: How do I exclude some products from showing up in New Products listing?

If you understand what you're doing when changing date-time values in a particular field for particular records, feel free. After all, it's your store.

We don't encourage raw hacking in the database because without understanding of how things work, one can mess things up, as I'm sure you're aware given your stated level of familiarity.

Feel free to alter the data ... but be sure you have backups, because it's incredibly hard to support things that have been changed if someone doesn't know what they did in the first place if they ended up creating problems!

Re: How do I exclude some products from showing up in New Products listing?

Take Doc's advice... Don't change dbase stuff unless you have a 100% way of restoring it if things go pear shaped.

I spent many long hours playing with all aspects of ZC - including using phpMyAdmin on the dbase, editing core code, fooling with templates, cloning modules....

..... ALL of the above were done on TEST SITES.

Even today - before I commit a change to a live shop, I always test it in a non-live site.

I thought that I made it clear that I don't intend to hack anything. :smile:

Anyway, thanks for making it even clearer. I am going to turn off the "New Products For This Month" box completely (at least for the next month or so).
