New Install yet cannot add categories?

Have downloaded and installed the latest version of Zen cart... followed all instructions etc as to the set up.
Problem is, when I go to the admin/catalog/categories-products tab and try to add a new category - I fill in the info for the new category and then hit the save button and NOTHING happens.... no category is saved or shows up.
Am I missing something / forgetting to do something?
Have to mention as well I opted NOT to install the sample store during the installation (if that makes a difference).
Help / suggestions ..... anyone?

When you say "nothing happens" after trying to set up a new category, do you not get any error messages? (These usually show up as lines of plain text after hitting "enter").

Often - when uploading new files (via FTP) - some files don't upload properly, and as PHP is extremely fussy and sensitive, the tiniest error can render a site inoperative.

Nothing happens at all I input the info for the new category and and hit save and nothing.... no error messages at all.
Would the fact that the ftp program was set to upload in binary have something to do with it? Am going to re-upload the files in ASCII instead and see if that makes a difference.... other than that I can't think of anything else.
I know when I installed for the first time I opted to install the sample store info as well and that was just alot of clutter.... this last install was without the sample store.

Set your FTP program to "auto" if possible. That'll allow the FTP client to decide how to upload files based on the file type and it'll switch from ASCII to binary when necessary.

... but remember to check what file extensions are "allocated" to ascii in the Auto Configuration. My FTP program did not originally list .php as an ascii upload in the Auto Configuration and I was in a complete flummox for several days!

Thanks guys and gals...... reset the ftp and assigned the files etc and it seems to have worked..... now the task of adding all my products :smile:
