okay i still dont get it - it tells me that i need to have different sizes each, upload them, and rename them but how do i make zc display the right ones for each?

Let's say you have a product with an image called 123.jpg. The medium sized image should be called 123_MED.jpg. The large image should be called 123_LRG.jpg. 123.jpg goes into the /images folder and will be the smallest size image. 123_MED.jgp goes into the /images/medium folder and 123_LRG.jpg goes into the images/large folder. You can create new folders within those folders as well, if you like. Once you do that, Zen Cart will do the rest for you.

ok, do i need to change anything in the admin/config/image ?

It's been a long time since I used that method. I know you can set the size of the small image in the admin. Check the tutorial I posted earlier and see if there's any more info. There's also a discussion of that information at http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9114.
