Vertical Subacategories

(whoops. sorry for the title. I meant. Horizontal Subcategories)

Hey everyone,

I'm sure this is possible. i just haven't ever had to do it yet...

I have a customer that wants the categories in the header. no problem.
then a horizontal row of just 1 level subcategories depending on which category is selected.

what is the best way to do this?

The columnar product listing mod is definitely a standard in all my builds...

Actually, what i'm looking for is just a horizontal list of subcategories depending on the category chosen above it.

this would be a perfect example:
