adding categories Images in main page

hello everyone......I wanted to add at least 8 pictures categories in the main page with links to the proper category with the title of the category on the bottom of the pic .....I manages to do the first one but the title showed up on the side and the other pics wouldnt show or center.

If im going to add 4 pictures first then another 4 pictures right bellow them with each picture title on the bottom of each picture with align setting(left,center,right..how u align the forth??) and how do i seprate the first 4 from the second set of picture

Why does it not work for you to show your categories on the home page with admin settings?

Configuration > Layout Settings >
Categories - Always Show on Main Page 1
and
Main Page - Opens with Category 0

and
Configuration > Maximum Values > Categories To List Per Row 4

Maybe one of you nice people can help me with a catagories issue. I have my catagories listed on the main page in the side box. Great. They are also listed in the center box. Any hints on how I can get rid of the listing in the center box? Catagories listed in side box is enough.
