took over a web page with a zen cart

I am in desperate need of help. I took over a web page that has a zen cart. I use dreamweaver in my page designs and I don't know php. The guy who has the server this page goes through is the one who set up the store. Here is the problem. He is mad he isn't doing the page anymore and won't give me any help in changing things in the store. It took fishing around to find out it was zen cart. Now to get into those files do I need to download zencart? if so then what do I do. I did buy the online manual.
Do I need to install a php?
do I need to install something like WAMP?
i am totally beside myself because I am so frustrated.
If I don't need to download anything where do I go to change the pages and what pages.
Am I just hopeless?
I would totally appreciate any help.

Re: took over a web page with a zen cart

Calm down, lets check for more details:

So you took over the site WITHOUT the server?

Re: took over a web page with a zen cart

Your situation is not hopeless, but the current host can make life hard for you. He should give you FTP access which you will need to upload files. If he won't do that, he is probably breaking his obligations as a host.

Okie, so you have access to the server and files?
Is the site currently working now?
Can you post the link to the site here?

Re: took over a web page with a zen cart

I guess it's time for some study at https://www.w3schools.com for starters...

There is lots of basic info in the FAQs here on how to begin working with Zen Cart. We can help if there is something you can't find.

What is it that you want to do? Could you provide a link to the site, as that would help us to understand your response.

I bought the online book. so I will study that too.
Do I need to download my own version of zen cart to make changes to the one I have up?

Ok. So he's a jerk, but I'd recommend putting that behind you, otherwise it's gonna get mighty boring for us. As yellow1912 indicates, what we're interested in is finding out what you want to do going forward.

Re: took over a web page with a zen cart

Ok, easy. You got the book right?
To change color scheme is a bit difficult for you rite now, but changing products is easy so lets begin with that.

You can edit product/category name, description by going to:
https://www.winfieldcountryroundup.com/store/admin
Then go to catalog

You should be able to find instructions in the book.

Re: took over a web page with a zen cart

No problem at all, everyone has to take the first step to go far. So be a bit patient and you will find out it's not as hard as you thought.

If it was me.. once I got the password etc. I would back-up the current database, install zencart on my local pc, download all the files and restore the db as it is right now to my local pc. Than I would change the password on ISP..
If you never worked with zencart, practice first on your local machine (advise from a new/green zenner).
