PHP4/PHP5 config question

Hi all,

I'm currently running zen 1.3.8 with PHP 4.4.7 w/MySQL 4.0.27.

There is a contribution (AJAX IMAGE Swapper), that I want to use that only runs on PHP5.

My hosting company default setting is PHP4 for the .php extention. They will allow me to run PHP5 by creating an .htaccess file with the following line added: AddType x-mapp-php5 .php, which will tell Apache to use PHP 5 instead of PHP 4 for the extension .php in the directory the .htaccess is placed and all sub-directories under it.

My question is do I put the .htaccess file in the site root directory or only in the directories where the mod is being placed?

Re: PHP4/PHP5 config question

Zen Cart not only works fine with PHP5, but soon won't be guaranteed to work with PHP4. So if your host isn't already making plans to switch completely, I'd stick that band aid in your Zen cart's root folder and have it apply to the whole cart.

Re: PHP4/PHP5 config question

Just as a General question, are people starting to run their hosts in php5 mode now? It seems as if zc 1.3.8a is working fine for people in php5 and the GoPHP5 initiative is coming up fast.. So is it good practice to add that line to my .htaccess file and start using php5?

-EDIT-
WOW i just checked and we are only 12.5 days away! I better get testing with my host.

Re: PHP4/PHP5 config question

php5 is just around the corner. I'm eagerly waiting for ZC to come fully php5 so that I will change all my mods to php5 as well.

Re: PHP4/PHP5 config question

Our test server has been running PHP5 for almost two years. Our public host (Camelot) also runs PHP5.

I stopped testing my mods against PHP4 many months ago, and no longer have easy access to it. I recommend to my clients that they only use hosts who offer PHP5 and help them to move if their existing host is falling behind.

PHP4 has passed its "end of life". Time to move on.

Re: PHP4/PHP5 config question

Well hot damn! That was simple. I put a phpinfo.php file in my zen-cart root. Checked it and it said php4.4.2 or something

I just added

AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php .php4 .php3 .phtml

to my .htaccess file in my zen-cart root directory and checked the phpinfo.php file I have in there and sure enough it is running php5.2.0 :)

My Tabbed Products Pro contrib appears to be completely transparent and working perfectly :)

Minimum 1.3.7.1 or 1.3.8 recommended for PHP5.
