Why are my Orders showing up as Paid automatically?

I am setting up my zencart for a specific clientelle, and we don't accept paypal, credit cards, etc. The only methods of payment are COD (if you are picking up the order or we are delivering it) or Cheque/Money Order, if you are mailing a payment to us and then we will ship the order. This is for an organization, and is not being developed for the general public to order from. When an order is placed, it is putting the orders into processing(2) and shows the payment as being received. Can someone clarify where I have gone wrong, and how to get it so the payments show as outstanding until we update the order to Delivered.

Go to localisation/orders status, and make sure that "pending" is set as the default.

I checked that and I do have pending set as the default. I have 4 payment types allowed, adjustments, cash, cheque, money order. I have my system set (now) that when an order is placed, it goes to pending. It is still not showing pending orders as outstanding, but if I run the Cash Report under Reports, it doesn't show any money being received either. It also shows nothing under outstanding payments. I am not sure if I have missed a step in the set up or what I have done wrong. Thanks for any help.

The Order Status setting is typically determined by the payment module used to complete the order.
So, if it's paid via the COD module, you need to set the COD module's Order Status setting to "Pending" (or leave it set to "default" if your store's default status is "Pending").

However, making this change only affects NEW orders placed AFTER you change that/those settings. Any existing orders are left alone ... you'll have to reset them manually to whatever status is appropriate for them.

I created an order, using COD as the payment method, and for some reason, it does not show up in the Cash Report, or the outstanding orders. Same problem when I created an order using chequ/money order. Is there a step in the installation that I may have missed? Other than this, it appears to be working great.

Well, I don't know what you're referring to by the "Cash Report".

The real question is ... what order status did your COD order get when you placed it?

When the COD order got placed, it was put in the pending status.

The "Cash Report" is a report available under the Reports heading.... I think possibly from a mod that has been added.

The order should now appear on the home page, and on the Admin->Customers->Orders page as Pending ... assuming you haven't installed customizations to change how those pages work.
The order should also show in the customer's My Account area, as Pending.
