Limit 1 Per Customer (digital downloads) - Possible?

Hi all,

I have a store that mainly sells digital downloads. I decided to put a couple sample files on there for free, for potential customers to download and see the quality of our products. This sample category is hidden (using HideCategories mod) so that they only link to the samples from other sites I've made that are intended to drive traffic to my store.

The intention was good, but the problem is, we have a few pain in the ######## customers who are abusing the free offer, and repeatedly 'purchasing' the free sample item over and over, taxing our resources (file size 30mb) and just a pain to look in admin and see a bunch of 0.00 orders from the same person. So my question is, I want to keep the free sample download for legit potential customers, but I would like a way to limit that item's purchase to 1 per customer (based on customer email address, IP, etc.).

Is there a way to do this? I've searched and couldn't find anything.

Assuming they have to create an account/be logged in to access this you can go to where you set this up in attributes and control downloads

The download attribute is set to 1 download/5 days. The problem is that the same customer is then going in and creating a NEW order, thus enabling a new download for the free item...

I am looking for a way to limit that item to one download/purchase total for each customer, but I don't think it's possible.

Charge a nominal fee of say $1.00...free downloads
are always open to abuse

I originally had the site set up with the "minimum order" mod and had that set at $3.00... however I really wanted people to be able to get the free sample item, but only one per customer. Probably will end up going back to the $3.00 minimum, or charging a nominal fee for the sample item...

I have the same problem, do we need to develop a mod? We need a parameter to limit the purchase per customer not per order

Could you make the item $5.00 and then issue a coupon for $5.00 that is only valid for a one time use per customer? That way it would be free and then you could control that it is only one per customer. Would that work?
