CHMOD and Style error during installation?

After installing the cart I received the warning: "Warning Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file"

After following the instructions in the help file and setting all required directories to 644, the error message didn't go away, but the page style did. If I CHMOD back to 777, the page style comes back.

Does anyone know the solution to this problem?
