Can't add my first product

I am unable to even create my first product. I have categories and sub categories, but when I click on the "new product" button I get an "HTTP 404 File Not found" message. The web page that is trying to load is:
<<mystore>> /admin/categories.php?product_type=1&cPath=2&action=new_p roduct&x=48&y=10

What am I missing?

the location you are attempting to add this to - does it have subcategories underneath it?
