PayPal IPN - Set Transaction Mode to Authorize Only

Hello,

I would like to configure the paypal transaction mode to 'auth only' or 'authorization' for all orders going to paypal.

What are the changes that need to be made, and in which file(s) do I make those changes? Also, can I do this as an override so future upgrades do not affect the changes?

Zen Cart 1.3.7.1

Thanks,
John

Re: PayPal IPN - Set Transaction Mode to Authorize Only

The IPN module does not currently offer authorize/capture options.
However, that functionality is built-in to the Express Checkout module.

Re: PayPal IPN - Set Transaction Mode to Authorize Only

Really surprised this isn't an option within ZenCart with "PayPal Website Payments Standard" as I'm sure there are 100's of businesses like myself that might not know for sure if an item is in stock and simply doesn't want ANY and ALL funds to be just automatically sent to our PayPal accounts without us giving the 'OK' for the funds to be actually transfered (after we confirm we have the item in hand and ready to send the customer).

But I did find a way around this tonight and figured I should share it for outsidesys and others who were like myself up until recently.

PayPal Wesbite Payments Standard
Log into your PayPal account.
Click on PROFILE
Click on FRAUD MANAGEMENT FILTERS
Edit your settings to the following (or something similar depending on your situation)
Check the box to activate "Maximum Transaction Amount"
Under the column "Filter Action"...Set it to "Review"
Under the column "Value"...Set it to 0.01

What this basically does is 'holds' payments for any order over $0.01 (one cent).
(obviously this can be changed for any currency I assume)

So now all orders placed with you will be put 'on hold' for your approval. Basically just like an "Authorization".

Hope this helps people. I know damn well it helped me a lot as now I can check to see if I have an item in stock before actually taking customer funds.

Hi,

This could be useful for me but I use a French-language version of Paypal and for the life of me I can't find anything similar in French to "Fraud Management Filters". Where exactly is it ?

Cheers

I list the directions in my post...but maybe it is laid out differently on the "French" PayPal website. Unfortunately I don't think I can really be any more clear...but I'll try...

Log into PayPal
Click on "MY ACCOUNT"

Now if you look underneath the "My Account" button where you just pressed...you will see "Overview"...to the right of that you will see "Add Funds"...to the right of that "Withdraw"...to the right of that "History"...to the right of that "Resolution Center"...to the right of that is PROFILE.

Click on PROFILE

Now you should have a page that has three columns. The column to the farthest right should be "Selling Preferences"...looking down this column...near the bottom is "FRAUD MANAGEMENT FILTERS"

There it is. (Hope this helps...otherwise I'm sorry but you might have to send an email to PayPal asking them about it)

Re: PayPal IPN - Set Transaction Mode to Authorize Only

Thanks for your reply but unfortunately in the French-language console, there's no such thing. In the first column there is an option called "notification" but when I click on it and try and change any of the settings, I receive a message saying the fraud management controls have been temporarily deactivated so that must be it.

Cheers

Pete

Re: Paypal Fraud Protection settings,

Wanted to try out these settings "Fraud Protection Services"
and could not find them in PayPal (US version)

so I did a search on PayPal and this is what they say...

Question :
Where are the Fraud Protection settings in the PayPal Manager?

Answer :
A If you have purchased Fraud Protection Services, you can access and modify the Fraud Protection settings under the Service Settings section of PayPal Manager.

So it looks like its gonna cost you to use this filter now :censored:

I too have a business account like you, however Fraud Management Filters are NOT free. They are included with a few different PayPal packages, one of which you might have purchased. The link isn't on my Profile page (where you described it to be) and I checked with PayPal and they tell me it's only available with certain packages.

I'd love to do the same thing you did... I'm not willing to pay $19.95/month for the privilege. :frusty:

I just recieved an e-mail from PayPal stating:

We're pleased to inform you that PayPal is upgrading your free fraud tools. Starting in February 2009, Risk Controls will be upgraded to the new Fraud Management Filters. Your current settings won't change, but now there will be a "pending" status that allows you to manually review risky transactions.

It looks like PayPal will be offering Fraud Management Filters for free once everyone has been upgraded.

Good news, however, who can afford to use Paypal ? Their fees are so expensive, they tend to wipe out the profit margin !

I received this email from PayPal as well, which also says that the website/store owner administrator must take some steps/changes to accommodate the PayPal change of Status "Pending" for Fraud Management.

Does this mean that ZenCart will have to make "urgent" or "Unplanned" changes to their code?

Thanks
