Adding a Latest Products/Featured Products box

OK, I may be dumb (I AM very new at this) but I have ZC 1.3.8 and the Mother Earth template. It doesn't have a latest products or featured products box in the main content area on the home page and I want both. How do I add those? And yes I did search, on my machine I can't go through 300 pages of stuff so any help would be appreciated.
