Large files downloads give 500 Internal Server Error

Hello everyone. I've had my ZenCart working for a while now, so I'm guessing this isn't a problem the ZenCart's causing, but I really don't know where to turn. The hosting site support tells me it's something with the script.

So, here's the problem:

I have many digital downloads on the site. I just noticed that the new one I put up wasn't working, so I decided to figure it out. It's an mp3 file, maybe 4 mb. So, I switched the downloads from redirect to just standard linking. And, it worked again!

I'm not happy about it, though, as it should work. I saw some information about changing the .htacess file, but it wasn't very specific.

Then, after that problem was fixed, I noticed that some of the other downloads don't work now.

I tried downloading EVERYTHING at the store and noticed this: all the small file downloads work and all the large file downloads don't! I just get that 500 Internal Server Error.

Now, if anyone wants to check this out first-hand, you can go to the store page: http://fusco-moore.com/store. Then, you can "order" "Jamnation 1" from there. It's free, so why not, right? Then, you can try to download one of the free mp3s, too. You'll see- the single mp3 will download and the album "Jamnation 1" won't.

Any help would be greatly appreciated- thank you in advance!

~Jim

Re: Large files downloads give 500 Internal Server Error

Check the apache server log file, see exactly what the error is.
If you dont know where to find the log file, contact your host.

I no longer provide installation support on forum for all my modules. However, if there are real bugs with the modules please feel free to contact me

Re: Large files downloads give 500 Internal Server Error

Well, two tech support calls later, and apparently my problem is being routed to the "higher-ups". I found the logs folder on my web server and looked through every document I could find. I couldn't find any error log, though.

Here's a list of the files I have in my logs folder (where the hosting company told me the logs would be):

access.log.07.1
ftp.log
info.py
info.pl
info.php
access.log.06.gz
traffic.db
access.log.current

I couldn't make heads or tails of the content in these log files, and I still haven't found an "error" log. I'll write again tomorrow after the hosting company applies their "fix".

Re: Large files downloads give 500 Internal Server Error

Okay, so no help from the web server. But, I have found some other interesting things:

  1. The .htaccess file seems to have something to do with it. I don't know if it's blocking the large downloads or what.

  2. Now, when I'm on my webspace and go to a site that doesn't exist, I get that 500 Internal Server Error instead of the normal 404 Not Found.

Anyone else have this problem before!

Yes something similar since I change on Admin--> My Store --> Admin Set max_execution_time for processes

why> I did not know what my daughter was doing on her site we are building to pay her college off. So I modified that parameter, the I realized she was uploding pictures the smallest one was 6.5 Mb and the average 11MB !!!!!

But that solved the problem. I think I changed to 2-5 min or something like that, don;t remember

Re: Large files downloads give 500 Internal Server Error

Thanks for the suggestion- tried it, but no help. It's not really a "timeout" thing, though.

Here's what I've found out:

  • The server must be running the ZenCart as a cgi, even though I'm on a Linux server. Believe me, I've been on the phone with them five times now- it's a shared server and they're not changing it.

  • Something in my .htaccess file is causing ALL the domains on my site to have a "500 Internal Server Error" whenever I go to a page that doesn't exist. It's supposed to be an Error 404 then. I took the .htaccess away, and I'm back to getting the normal 404 messages.

  • The server company keeps telling me it's a problem with the script or that it's something with the .htaccess. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I've found at least three different .htaccess files on my web space and in the Zen Cart folders. Which do I change and what would I change?

  • Does the .htaccess file have anything to do with the fact that I get that 500 error when downloading the larger files on my ZenCart?

  • And, isn't a server that runs php as cgi not supposed to use .htaccess anyway? I'm very confused and spent hours running into problems upgrading (thinking that maybe if I upgraded in a different folder, I could just start fresh) because the SQL file didn't have the right permissions. Someone please give me SOMETHING to go off of!

Re: Large files downloads give 500 Internal Server Error

Hello everyone. I found something that may hold the key to the problem. Well, I disabled all my .htaccess files temporarily so I don't get the 500 Internal Server Errors anymore.

But now, when I go to download something, I get a 404-Not Found error page.

Here's what I noticed:

I have download as redirect turned to "on". I KNOW that the downloads don't work right when I turn it "off", so I figured I'd give this a try again.

My store is located at http://fusco-moore.com/store.

When I click the download button, it redirects me to the pub/.izloyxvqjfeubhygrnxb folder. That folder now exists on my webspace.

The problem is this:

it comes up as http://fusco-moore.com/pub/.izloyxvqjfeubhygrnxb

Why doesn't it have the "store" folder there between the .com and the /pub??

How can I fix this so it redirects to the proper folder??

Thanks,

~Jim

Re: Large files downloads give 500 Internal Server Error

I FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does happy dance

I went into the configure.php in the includes folder and changed the DEFINES line with the pub folder from "pub/" to "store/pub". But why did I have to do that? EVERYTHING else on the site works fine. All the rest of the DEFINES lines don't need that "store" before it. It's a very odd bug there, but I'm so incredibly happy it's working again and that I don't have to start over.

I hope this ordeal helps someone out in the future. If anyone ever has questions about this specific topic, I've learned so much troubleshooting over the past few days, I'd be glad to help.

EVERYTHING else on the site works fine. All the rest of the DEFINES lines don't need that "store" before it.The normal setting for that line would be this:```
define('DIR_WS_DOWNLOAD_PUBLIC', DIR_WS_CATALOG . 'pub/');

... and it would normally work just fine if DIR_WS_CATALOG is properly configured with the path to your "store" folder.

Thus, either you have fudged up your settings for HTTP_SERVER and DIR_WS_CATALOG, or you are using very old or customized code that has bad default settings in your configure.php files.

And ... none of your solution makes sense as affecting "large files only" ... it should affect *all* files equally.
