Out of stock - but checkout allowed

Hi,
As a new user I am confused by the fact that it seems that if an item shows that it has insufficient stock to fulfill an order then it is still possible to use the Paypal Express checkout from the Shopping cart.

Quite often it is also possible to leave the cart via the Checkout button when one is sent to the Welcome login screen. This does not always happen, I have also seen it force the user to remain at the cart until the quantity required is reduced.

The Zen cart is V1.3.8a and a new install with the only change being the use of the Future_Zen template. The site is being used for testing only at the moment.

I have the following settings which from reading the forum & the excellent book I would have expected to solve the problem.

Check stock level - true
Subtract stock - true
Allow checkout - false
Product status in catalog... - 0

I suspect that I have simply missed an important flag

I have spent more time investigating this & it looks like things are working correctly, but not necessarily in a user friendly way.

I have noticed that even when there is insufficient stock available it is possible to leave the shopping cart by using the Checkout or Paypal buttons.

In both cases, after logging in to the respective location, the customer is then bounced back to the shopping cart & has the resolve the "insuffucient stock" problem before proceeding further. It would be better IMHO to prevent the customer logging in until the problem is cleared.

In the case of the Checkout route I have modified the "checkout_shipping.php" file to perform the Stock Check function (lines 41-50) to take place prior to the Logged on check (lines 21-31).

Changing the ipn_main_handler.php routine is causing me a problem (due to my lack of experience) & any help here would be gratefully received.
