if card declined, just returns to payment page

we are using authorize.net - if someones billing doesn't match their entered info, it just takes them back to the payment page with no message... it is getting declined at authorize because of AVS and should say something like "Please double check your billing address and make sure it matches the billing address on your credit card"

how can I do this? right now it doesn't say anything and a lot of people call and say our site isn't working, then I tell them and they fix it and the order goes through

I've not seen this happen, but will add it to my list of things to check on.

In the short term, you might add some explanation text to your checkout-payment page.
