How to display expanded subcategories on clicking categories

I am setting up my shop now.. Now when clicking on a category, it displays all the subcategories under it. Instead I would like to display the products.

I had done a fair bit of search in the Admin configuration and in the forums but couldn't find a solution yet.

Please forgive my ignorance - but why are you using sub-cats if you want to jump right to the products?

Well, I would like to group products with sub categories. For example if I have a category Gifts, I would like to have sub categories grouped by age. Like gifts for 0-2 years, 2-4 years, girls, boys etc. By clicking on gifts customer should see all gifts available. With expanded subcategory menu they could directly go to the desired group.

I think this should be a normal case and would be good to have an option available.
