Help with replacing subcategories with image?

hi everyone! this is my first forum post and after searching here directly and on google for many hours to no avail, I figured it's about time to consult with the experts (you all). I would like to customize my layout so that when someone clicks a category in my sidebox, instead of seeing all of the subcategories linked in the center box, an image shows up instead. The image I've made reads "<--Please choose a subcategory." I would like users to refer to the left sidebox with this image. I've already used one of the mods available in Downloads to hide the subcategories and am now just stumped on how to place my image in the now blank center box.

hi everyone, just wanted to update this thread by answering my own question heehee! I spent an entire day trying to figure this out and it turned out to be THE EASIEST THING IN THE WORLD to do. boy do I feel silly! What I did to achieve this is go into admin>catalog>categories/products, then click the green "e" button next to a category that contains subcategories.

In the category description section, I entered the HTML to insert an image (the image was text that says "<--please choose category") and saved. yes, it was that simple...i can't believe it took me so long to figure this out, haha! Now, when a customer clicks a category in the sidebox, instead of seeing the subcategories appear (redundant, imo) in the center box as text, they will see my image directing them to choose a category in the sidebox.
