Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

Hello all.

Have spent a while looking through these forums, some great stuff on here.

My main concern is Custom Page titles.

I am aware I can set the general Page Title layout in the meta_tags.php file which is fine.

I realise zen has the above system in place because genearlly people do not want to manually edit every single page title in their shop..

i have also seen the the configuration>product info section that allows you to remove the price from the title and so on.

However, if I wanted a custom Page Title for a specific page, category or product, how would I go about this.

I presume I would need to place some kind of DEFINE code in the meta_tags.php file but have not found any specific examples on how to do this..

your help is much appreciated, thanks in advance

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

Hi there, just a brief follow up to this post.

There is usually a reason these posts aren't replied to. I am sorry if I am asking the obvious.

I would really appreciate a reply, just letting me know if my request is possible.

Thanks

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

Hello there.

Thank you for the reply, it is much appreciated.

I have looked at the article, two points:

  1. It focuses mainly on customizing meta tags for specifc categories and products.

  2. In regards to Page Titles, it only explains how you can specify site wide titles..

Common Site-Wide
To define site-wide tags such as charset, keywords and description, go to includes/languages/english/YOUR_TEMPLATE_NAME/meta_tags.php and edit that file for keywords, site title, site tagline and site description.

My main focus is Custom Site Wide Page Titles, not meta tags. In the following:

Custom Site-Wide
For meta tags not covered by the previous paragraph, copy the includes/templates/template_default/common/html_header.php file to your includes/templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE_NAME/common/ folder. Open it up and add your own meta tag to those already there by default.

would i be able to create a template php file that lists custom page titles (<title></title>) and then register those titles to various category and product pages throughout the website?

Thanks

    Custom page titles for products and categories are set in the same place as the description and keyword meta tags.

Christian.

The metatag title edit won't change the url in the address bar; what it affects is the title at the top of the browser window.

To change the url, you need to use one of the SEO mods available in Downloads and elsewhere.

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

there seems to be some confusion..

i am not trying to change the url, i have used SEO URLs add on for that.

I am trying to change the Page Title tag <title>...</title> HTML tag that appears at the top of the browser window like you said.

The Page Title, not the URL, I used the MetaTag Title and when i confirmed the changes it wasnt change in the browser window.. seen here..

http://www.londonheathrowcars.com/preview2.jpg

the automatic page title template is overiding the manual title i entered and i dont want it to..

does that make sense?

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

From your screenshot, you have specified to use everything that shows in the browser title bar, but the "Meta Tag Title" you entered in the box (also apparently specified to show) does not show.

It does seem like the "Buy Furniture Now | Table" should also be there, and I don't know why it isn't.
If youi want the auto title to not show, you have to turn off some of the elements. I don't know which parts of the auto title you want to go away.

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

Hi, thanks again for this support, it is much appreciated (and needed!)

I tried turning off all the title includes (set them all to No) and I clicked preview, then i clicked update. I went back to the meta edit screen and they were all back on Yes.

this tells me that something in my php code is overwriting the changes i make using the interface. I think it would be useful at this stage if i paste my php, perhaps there is something in this code that is doing it.

here it is..

<?php
/**
 * @package languageDefines
 * @copyright Copyright 2003-2005 Zen Cart Development Team
 * @copyright Portions Copyright 2003 osCommerce
 * @license http://www.zen-cart.com/license/2_0.txt GNU Public License V2.0
 * @version $Id: meta_tags.php 4273 2006-08-26 03:13:52Z drbyte $
 */

// page title
define('TITLE', 'Buyfurniturenow.co.uk');

// Site Tagline
define('SITE_TAGLINE', 'Bedroom Furniture, Dining Room Furniture, Oak Furniture, Pine Furniture and Wooden Furniture');

// Custom Keywords
define('CUSTOM_KEYWORDS', 'Bedroom Furniture, Dining Room Furniture, Oak Furniture, Pine Furniture, Wooden Furniture');

// Review Page can have a lead in:
define('META_TAGS_REVIEW', 'Reviews: ');

// separators for meta tag definitions
// Define Primary Section Output
  define('PRIMARY_SECTION', ' : ');

// Define Secondary Section Output
  define('SECONDARY_SECTION', ' - ');

// Define Tertiary Section Output
  define('TERTIARY_SECTION', ', ');

// Define divider ... usually just a space or a comma plus a space
  define('METATAGS_DIVIDER', ' ');

// Define which pages to tell robots/spiders not to index
// This is generally used for account-management pages or typical SSL pages, and usually doesn't need to be touched.
  define('ROBOTS_PAGES_TO_SKIP','login,logoff,create_account,account,account_edit,account_history,account_history_info,account_newsletters,account_notifications,account_password,address_book,advanced_search,advanced_search_result,checkout_success,checkout_process,checkout_shipping,checkout_payment,checkout_confirmation,cookie_usage,create_account_success,contact_us,download,download_timeout,customers_authorization,down_for_maintenance,password_forgotten,time_out,unsubscribe');

// favicon setting
// There is usually NO need to enable this unless you wish to specify a path and/or a different filename
//  define('FAVICON','favicon.ico');

?>

now i dont want to completely remove this title from every page..

what i want to do is keep this title for now, but allow me to overwrite each one with what i enter using the interface..

any thoughts?

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

I have a feeling that, rather than something overriding your settings, the settings you are making are not being saved (they would be saved in the database).

If you go back to that edit page, do the settings you made the last time still appear?

If this is the problem, it will take someone with more expertise in the subject to fix it.

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

ok, i think the problem has something to do with the database like you said. i have done another test and have seen the following results, the product i am dealing with is shown here.

http://www.buyfurniturenow.co.uk/honister-2-drawer-bedside-p-1134.html

i go into that item..

http://www.londonheathrowcars.com/screen1.jpg

then i set all the title includes to No and write TEST TITLE in the Meta Tag Title box, I hit Preview

http://www.londonheathrowcars.com/screen2.jpg

i am then presented with this screen so i hit update..

http://www.londonheathrowcars.com/screen3.jpg

when i go back into the Meta section of that produce, the title includes have been set to Yes automatically, my sample title is still there but the Page Title<title> hasnt changed on the actual page..

http://www.londonheathrowcars.com/screen4.jpg

i need help!

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

hi, i have found a solution..

basically the zen cart cms wont let you add a custom page title unless you also specify either the keywords or the description aswell!

i set all the includes to No except the Title tag, wrote a custom title in the title textbox and added a meta description, and it WORKED!

i hope this post helps others.. thanks again.

Re: Custom Page Title for Pages, Categorys and Products

I was doing some search about meta tags and this seems to be the closes to where i should as my question.

Before I had zen cart 3.7 and on this hosting server And when I searched in google it would bring up some pages and there were already meta tags define for it. So it uses a default settings or something.

BUt then I moved hosting server because the first one was not working well. But I upgraded to the 3.8 zen cart. And now when I searched on google it doesnt have any search for the page that it use to show. It is finding all the old page. But it doesnt find any of the new pages. Like it doesnt have default meta tags for it.

The web site is https://www.oxicore.com and https://www.oxicore.co.nz

This is the closes that i can explain in text. But Im not seeing any links to the site from search engine as if it has no meta tags on it.
