Sales tax for two states

How do I setup my taxes to collect two different sales taxes for two different states? I need to collect if the product is sent to a CA or a UT address. The percentages are different, so I can't just put one amount in. Luckily, I only have to worry about one rate per state.

Right now, the cart seems to be calculating only on those two states, but it isn't getting the right amount. I have both rates defined. I don't know how to have two rates for one zone.

I would really appreciate any direction given. Thanks.

Re: Sales tax for two states

You would setup separate ones for each State with their own rate ...

Did you happen to look at how Florida was configured?

Re: Sales tax for two states

Separate what? Products? I have separate tax classes and rates. I don't know how to tell one product that it could be charged one of two rates.

Unfortunately, the Florida example was modified and deleted. Is there a way to get it back? Or, could you easily tell me how it was?

Thanks for your speedy reply.

Re: Sales tax for two states

I am pretty certain this is how it's done. Hopefully I will be corrected by another person if this isn't correct. Here goes:

  1. Admin -> Locations / Taxes -> Zone Definitions
    Click insert
Type in the Zone name and definition for the new zone (i.e. zone name: California – Description: California Sales Tax)
    Click insert
  2. In the same area with California highlighted (clicked once) click details on the right side of the screen.
    Click insert
Country drop-down menu choose United States. Zone drop-down menu choose California. Click insert
    Click back
  3. Admin -> Locations / Taxes -> Tax Rates
    Click new tax rate
    Zone drop-down menu choose California
Tax Rate field – enter California tax rate (8.25) ?? I don’t know what it is off hand, sorry.
Description – enter something that makes sense but know this: this description is seen by your customer so make it clear and meaningful.
Priority field – 1 (I think?) Somebody will correct me if wrong.

That is all, to my knowledge for making a new tax rate. Follow the same steps for Utah.

Re: Sales tax for two states

Thanks for your description on making the tax rate.

How do I make one product use two tax rates? That is what I'm up against.

Whenever someone buys the product that is shipped from CA, I need tax to be charged if it is shipped to CA or UT.

Thoughts?

Re: Sales tax for two states

To my knowledge the product is either taxed or not taxed. As for a customer buying a product and having it shipped to one of your States that you charge sales tax, that is based on the Shipping address of the customer.

For instance, if product A has a tax class of Taxable Goods and it is purchased by a customer in Arizona (not one of your States you charge tax for) then there is no tax charged. If the same product is purchased from a customer in California then sales tax is charged. Zen cart does all the calculations as long as you have it set up properly.

Adding the tax rate as I mentioned previously would do this for you for California. You will need to do this for your 2nd State. Then Zen Cart will figure it all out for you on who gets charged tax and who doesn't.

Please, one of the gurus reading this ... if this isn't right or is, please confirm.

Thanks

Re: Sales tax for two states

Build the Zone for the State to be taxed ...

Then, add the Tax Rate for Taxable Goods and Priority 1 and the Rate for the Tax ...

You should be able to setup as many as you need for your business ...

Please delete the Tax Rate(s) before removing this zone

Well here is the issue I cant find the tax rates that I setup to be able to delete them where in the heck are they? I look under tax classes and tax rates and there is nothing there PLEASE HELP!
