Lost columns and boxes...

Hi,
I'm new to this, and am trying to alter the appearance of my shop front. I've created an override template and altered the css. Thats all I've done so far.
In Layout settings, column left and right status are both set to 1, and in tools>layout box settings, I've got a couple of boxes selected to appear in the left and right, but nothings there.
Where have my columns/boxes gone?
Any ideas?

Any new template does not have column information automatically as this is template specific

go to

admin > tools > layout boxes controller > RESET

The RESET was my ticket as well thanks so very much. So now do I need to make a CUSTOM folder for any of the side boxes?
