Category Images Not Appearing

I find myself in an unusual situation.

Up until now my main page has been a category page. I set this by configuration > layout settings > Main Page - Opens with Category.

I now want the normal main page to appear with the category images there. They aren't appearing, nor is featured products or any of the other product lists. Strange?

I have set: "Categories - Always Show on Main Page" to 1

Whats wrong?
