trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

Man, I've been at this all day. I'm deep into the night now and I don't know what else to try...

ahhhh

I am following all the instructions exactly - but am getting no results.

Right now, I'm at the simple stage of getting the zencart installed.

I created my directory on the server and called it zencart

i then dragged all the files off my desktop into this new directory i created in my ftp program, firezilla

now, i go to my site: http://biomathealth.com/zencart/zc_install/

but i get this message:

The requested URL /zencart/zc_install/ was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/1.3.36 Server at biomathealth.com Port 80

so then i installed xampp - have no idea what it is but i installed it. now i see i actually need mamp

why is this so complicated??

am i supposed to do something with these programs to get the zencart files onto the server?

i appreciate your help.

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

jenb:

I created my directory on the server and called it zencart

"where" did you create that directory?

A webserver serves its website content from files located in specific folders, technically referred to as the "web root" (ie: the "root" or start of the website-accessible content).
On a linux server this is usually a "public_html" or "htdocs" or "httpdocs" or "html" folder, often located under several other folders ... eg: /home/myaccount/public_html or /var/www/htdocs

On your mac, inside Finder, do you have a folder that has a name akin to websites? You'd be well-advised to be moving/placing your Zen Cart folder inside that directory before trying to access it from a browser.

Similarly, XAMPP typically serves its web-page content from (on Windows) C:\xampp\htdocs. I imagine it would be something similar on your mac.
XAMPP and MAMP should have some documentation about "where" the "web root" is located, ie: where you're supposed to place your files so that its Apache service can serve them for you.

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

  1. I downloaded zencart to my desktop
  2. I moved the files into my website folder (biomathealth) , created a folder called zencart
  3. Then I opened my server - went to filezilla, and opened up the files to biomathealth
  4. Dragged files from my computer into the server - the website files

first of all, it doesn't even copy them all. its like 1700 files and it just leaves 1000 files les in que.

then, when i go to log in and start insallation, the page fails - even though i can see that the folder zc_install/ is installed on my server in firezilla.

http://biomathealth.com/zencart/zc_install/ - doesn't bring me anywhere.

is there step by step instructions for mac that work?

I am not a web wizard, but i can do it if it is step by step. if i have to get
get too creative, i get lost because i don't even understand what apache is,......

i just need to know step by step.

i've been following instructions, but theye aren't working. p

i guess because i'm on a mac.

help? ideas? step by step how to do this??

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

and so i'm clear - when you say "where"

its specifically going into my server, opening the folder to my website, and dragging the folder zencart from my computer to the server.

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

I see a "zencart" folder on your site, but it's empty ... as if no files have been copied to it:
http://biomathealth.com/zencart/

first of all, it doesn't even copy them all. its like 1700 files and it just leaves 1000 files les in que.
I'm not familiar with firezilla to comment on it. Maybe it's not so reliable? esp if it's leaving files untransferred.
I've heard of Fetch as a popular FTP program for mac. Do you have that available?

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

Hi jenb,

I'll try to simplify things a bit here:

Zen Cart requires server software like PHP, Apache, and MySQL to run.

For testing and development purposes, you can use MAMP or XAMPP (which bundles PHP, Apache and MySQL) to run your Zen Cart store on your **personal **computer or laptop. This setup usually means only you have access to the Zen Cart store.

To start selling online, you will need to run Zen Cart on a **remote **host which already has PHP, Apache and MySQL running. There is thus no need for XAMPP or MAMP in this case since the required server software is already present.

Installation on a remote host can be done via an installer like Fantastico (not recommended) or you install Zen Cart yourself as you have already tried.

The important thing is to make sure you have uploaded *all *the required files for installation to the *correct document root *(as DrByte) mentioned before you commence the installation.

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

Yes, what you described is possible because one of the default payment modules that come with Zen Cart already does that.

The payment module is "Credit Card - Offline Processing" can be activated and configured under Modules > Payment in your Admin Console.

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

i'm still not clear though what i need to do at thisis point

filezilla was recommened by zencart as a good ftp program, so i don't think there is a problme with it...

even whe3n i successfully copy all files to the server, my link doesn't work... is there anyone out there with experience doing this on a mac, on OSX 10.4?

because the other insturctions just aren't working...

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

I'll take a turn here. As DrByte mentioned, there are no files in your Zencart folder on your remote server (https://www.biomathealth.com/zencart), so you haven't uploaded anything yet.

Ignore the instructions which deal with installing Zencart on your local (home) computer. That step isn't necessary. Forget about MAMP and XAMPP.

Filezilla works fine, as far as I know, PC or Mac, so that's probably not the problem.

Let us know who your webhost is, and if they offer CPanel or not.

Re: trouble uploading on my mac server. HELP!

I was told to throw away the book. I agree everyone says it is so easy, buy the book etc but it is not. I have been at this since December and had to take a 90 day leave. I was told if you have a webhosting company you do not need to do all the "STUFF" in the book just upload to the site. My files would not load either and no one would give me step by step instructions either. The book is wonderful for creating your "database" of items to sell. My hosting company just offered this week an installation program called simple scripts and said to use this instead of fantastico. I finally gave up trying to install myself and was ready to use fantastico again when I received the announcement for simple scripts. It does look like more information did load with simple scripts than it had previously with fantastico.

Be aware, if you do not create a shopping cart or "zencart" it will install on your home page. I finally figured out how to create a sepearate folder to install my shopping cart on while I create the items etc because the first time it got installed it took over my whole website and removed all the information I had already created. I wanted the shopping cart as an addition to my site not instead of my site.

The next issue you will find is that the book and help info does not give a lot of direction on "editing" all of "ZENCART" that you see. I am still trying to figure out how to remove all the ZENCART advertising and fill in the information with my own. I am at the same place as you, no guru, but could figure things out a lot better with COMPLETE step by step instructions. It seems everytime someone offers help there is one critical step missing.

Good luck, as I figure more out I will post as well. Right now I am just happy to have the cart on my site and am busy adding all of my items prior to making it public. That is a job in and of itself as well.
