County dropdown displays United Kingdom when creating account

When creating an account, when you fill in the county as part of the required form, and submit it, it brings up an error asking you to select a county from the dropdown menu which appears. The only option in this is United Kingdom.

If you select this, the VAT calculations work. If you don't, then the VAT isn't calculated at the checkout.

Obviously I need VAT calculating and showing to the customer, but how can I get rid of this whole county dropdown thing? I've tried turning it off in customer details, but again, the VAT isn't calculcated.

I resolved this by reversing the county >> country display order on the registration page, and by selecting (in admin console) "use dropdown for county".

This has the effect of allowing the visitor to choose COUNTRY first, which then kicks in that javascripted dropdown for COUNTY - so they can't create an error by typing in a county name (before selecting country) which may not be in the dbase.

I trust your DEFAULT country setting in admin is "United Kingdom"... ?

In my example, if the customer selects United States, then the US states appear below in the dropdown.

Try selecting "Switzerland" as a country, and then see the Swiss cantons appear in the dropdown.

Any country NOT set up with province zones, will offer the "type a choice below".

Yeah the default country is set to United Kingdom.

So did you input all those counties manually as zones?

did not get that how you changed the order of country and county.
i mean how can i dispay country above and county under it.

can you please point out in right direction.

ok found a way of doing that
edited tpl_modules_create_account.php and cut the code of state/province and pasted it below the country.

simple solution.
might be you was pointing towards this.
