stupd revision question

I'm running 1.3.8 - if I install something like better categories, which says it works with 1.3.7, should I just figure on Yet Another Long Night Of Suffering?

Re: stupd revision question

Not if you set up a test site and only make the changes to the test site until you get it working. ;)

Re: stupd revision question

So it sounds like Another Long Night of Suffering... Sigh...

(my standard routine is now "full backup, hack, hack, hack, hack," and either a happy dance or restore...

Re: stupd revision question

Just be certain you are using the override system when you make your changes. It'll save you lots of heartache in the long run.

FWIW, my background goes way back to z80 assembler... lemme tell you about PAIN... I'm probably too used to doing things the hard way.

Re: stupd revision question

Many mods will work for v1.3.8 even thouigh their last revision was for an earlier version.

A quick way to check (aside from reviewing support threads) would be to compare the files contained in the mod package with the 1.3.8 (and earlier if necessary) changelog. If the files have not been modified, there is a good chance the mod will still drop in ok. In some cases, the new version file changes are not connected to the mod changes, so can be merged without hassle.

Re: stupd revision question

But if Clive's Sinclair Basic had survived instead of Commodore, we'd be MUCH better off today. I have fond memories of ZXing with my 300baud mocem. Still have an 80, 81, and TWO TS-128s:yes:

My current trick on upgrades is:

  1. Create a copy of 1.3.8.a without all the extra bells and whistles of the demo. I used the info from DrByte at http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17416&postcount=2. I then FTPd the files back to my hard drive to save for future playing.
  2. Download the mod and change any "YOUR_TEMPLATE" directories to the appropriate name.
  3. Use winmerge to see if the mod changes any existing files or files in mod folders I've already loaded to the site.
  4. Change readme.txt to mod_1234_readme.txt so I can find it later in the root.
  5. I rename the folder for this mod to reflect the site that I'm moddingIf no major conflicts are found, I throw the mod in. You can do so confident in knowing exactly what you might be changing.

By not following the override system, you're making things much more difficult on yourself than necessary. The Zen Cart developers have made a huge effort to make Zen Cart customizable without hacking into the core code.

I've been a COBOL programmer for over 20 years, so my experience goes back a long way, too. The first programming language I learned was BASIC. Ah, memories...

Re: stupd revision question

I have a WORKING Kaypro CP/M machine down in the basement that can be booted and into Wordstar before my Gatedell +P+ machine up here figures out that it should be maybe doing something...

control-k-s, baby!
