new down for maintenance page

I have been attempting to customize the down for maintenance page template, but what ever I do it always loads into the standard zencart page frame, even if I turn off the header, sideboxes and footer in the admin.

What I'd like to do is just have a completely blank page with our company logo in the center, that says down for maintenance on a solid background load up when I turn on maintenance in the admin.

seems like it should be pretty simple but whatever I do it still has the same zen page frame.

any ideas how to do it, what files to modify, and where to put it?

Did you go to Admin>Configuration>Website Maintenance and specify the filename of the page you want to use?

Try putting the file in the root directory of your site.

I have changed the name of the file in the admin config, I placed it in my CUSTOM TEMPLATE directory, but it still pulls the page into the zencart frame rather than displaying it as a blank page. I need to figure out a way to create a new blank index. I was unable to get it to work in my root directory, I think I may have had the wrong filepath.
