Suggestion for you heavy duty Zen programmers

Hi there,

For those of you who know their way around Zen and have some spare time your your hands (yeah, right hahaha), here's a suggestion that would not only benefit me, but possibly others who are facing the same problem/issue I have.

**Issue: ** Cannot link a shipping charge attribute created under the Categories/Products section and product total together.

Description: Let's say you have a number of items you wish to apply a fixed-cost shipping rate, but each item is different, and you therefore want to apply a different flat rate shipping cost to each item. For example:

  • Item A costs $10 and you want to apply a $5 flat shipping rate to it
  • Item B costs $20 and you want to apply a $7 flat shipping rate to it
  • Item C costs $25 and you want to apply the same rate as Item A
  • and so on...

Now, the attributes controller allows you to create a Shipping attribute that can be applied to each item. So you go ahead and create a shipping attribute for Item A and apply the $5 rate to it. In the product description, the attribute information shows up as expected - e.g. "Flat Rate Shipping Charge $5", or something like that.

This is cool, since the customer is aware that there will be an additional $5 added to the cost of the item for shipping.

Unfortunately, there is no way that the shipping attribute can be applied to the total when the customer goes through the check out process, at least none that I could find. There is of course, the ability to have Zen add the shipping attribute cost automatically to the price of the product. This might be sufficient for some, but from a psychological standpoint, it is better to see Item A cost $10 than it is to see it cost $15.

**Proposal: ** It would ultra-cool if one of you heavy Zen experts can create some sort of link between a shipping attribute under the product categories section to the total cost values at the check out. If this can be done, it would allow people to create shipping attributes of various values that would be automatically processed at the end of the sale process.

I admit that I am not fully versed on Zen, so if there already is a way to accomplish this, I sincerely apologize for wasting your time and would be grateful if you could explain how to do it.

Best regards,
Mark
