I cannot email customers and new customers can not regester

I'm very new to all the but I seam to be haveing some trouble.
Customers can not regester or log in on my site and I can not email them ether can some one please help I have been working on this all week with no luck thank :huh:

under the admin/configueration/email options
I had to change it to php
