Only Show Sub Categories in Left Hand Column

I am setting up an online store here - > http://johnnycakebooks.com/index.php and have set up 6 categories but this presents a problem, I need to be able to link to the main or top category across the top using E-Z pages....if I set up a main category with 6 sub categories, then I do not want to have the main or top cateogry appear in the left hand side, I only want the six sub categories to appear.

I've looked throughout the forum and can't find anything that would help me in doing this, I wasn't sure what to call this post either, but have decided that if I could set up a main or top leverl category with the six categories under it, but then only show the six sub categories in the left hand side category section that that would be the solution, however if anyone else has another solution, great!

Yes, it does appear to work according to the original specification, but I have to wonder what benefit it is to get the list of categories on the center of the page as shown. I could see if there were descriptions of each category in that display...

Hello and Thank you for the replies and comments... Yes, I did come up with a way to accomplish what I wanted to and that is:

I set up a top level category with six subcategories under it, I then noted the address for each, such as index.php?main_page=index&cPath=13_9 and then in ADMIN/TOOLS/LAYOUT BOXES CONTROLLER I turned off the display of sideboxes/categories.php, then using EZ pages I set up an EZ page for the main/top category, said it should only be displayed in the header and used the Internal Link URL, I did the same for each of the sub categories but have them only displaying in the Sidebox.... So, by using EZ pages and specifically the Internal Link URL I was able to do this....

To answer the question of what benefit this gives, I have to say originally I did not propose having a link across the top to get to the products, in this case, books. I just proposed having what are now sub categories, originally the categories, in the left hand side bar, but the store owner wanted a link across the top as well, maybe because currently the site has all the links across the top, this zen cart is replacing an existing non-shopping cart site...

Using EZ pages made this work, I couldn't figure out how to just show sub categories in the left hand sidebar which is what I was orginally thinking I needed to do.
