"editing" when you are at the developers tool kit

Ok, it could be that I have stared at all of this for too long, but, I also think I am one step away from making it all happen. I have the manual and I have searched it and the forums looking for an answer. I am going through the steps to customize and make changes to the site. I have been to the developers tool kit, I can pull up exactly what I want to change. I understand what I need to do. But, I can't figure out how to make the "edit" part happen. I know I need to copy to another location, make changes and then upload these changes from somewhere. At one time I thought I found the answer to the uploading part, as in going to the cpanel to do this.

Please help me in step one step two format. This step unlocks the entire overriding process and everything else that I want to do. I am very new to all of this, so if you can help me, please don't leave out elementary stuff.

Once you have located what you want to change, the best way is to go into your files via FTP or use the backup copy you have on your desktop, CD-RW, etc.

The Developers Tool will tell you exactly where the page is that you need. Is it in the catalog or admin?

Some edits are done through Tools -> EZ pages. Most are not.

What exactly do you want to do and what is your sites address so we can see the step 1 and 2?

Thank you for your response. The problem is I don't know how to get this backup copy, or edit through ftp. So far my experience has been with a little html, enough to feel very dangerous. I follow help and tutorials to the letter, but occasionally, I just can't figure out a few simple steps. And you hit it right on the head, this is where I am stuck.

I mainly want to work on look and feel, and things that can't be done on the admin panel. I have read the chapters and forum entries on overriding, and I feel like I am so close to figuring this out.

Site is store.home-remodeling-how-to.com. That is a subdomain, hosted by Blue Host, main site is SBI, I have already installed the paypal business standard as the gateway. My products will be exclusively downloads and services. I am particularly interested in just making it user friendly, wording it to fit me. I would eventually like to have it look like my site, but, I am not going to stress about that right now. The driving impetus is that I have customers waiting to buy and I have to keep putting them off because of my own incompetence with this issue.

I took the down for maintenance off so you can look. While doing so, I noticed that the categories, product types that I had entered this afternoon are not there.

At this point I am in admin - as in getting the generic verbiage off and putting mine on. Pretty much a carbon copy of every help in this section. Except I don't see how to edit. Thanks again. A thought just occurred to me, can't tell if I gave this to you or not: there are hyphens between each word: store.home-remodeling-how-to.com.

Depending on your PC there are a number of FTP applications to choose from.

Mac- Fetch, Filezilla, Interarchy, etc

Take a moment and find one you like, then changes can be made directly with your site.
