How do create a list of Categories With Pictures

Hi, i've trawled the forums and help files and now need some further advice.... I would like to create a page which creates a (automated) list of categories with pictures similar to this. See 'Select a Category' section on the main page:

http://www.rubberduckbathrooms.co.uk/store/

Does anyone know how to do this / point me in the right direction.
