Is it legal to use zen cart if you a web designer working for a client? A friend told me there were some issues with selling open source software.

No problem at all, you are not selling ZC itself, but you are selling your service (design, coding, etc...). When you charge your customers, clearly state that you are charging for the services, not the software itself.
I no longer provide installation support on forum for all my modules. However, if there are real bugs with the modules please feel free to contact me

As mentioned, as long as you don't accept money for the code you'll be fine.
What you would be doing (and I do this all the time) is sell your design and modifications to the core code/ templates etc.
Tell staff why this post should be reviewed.
