How do I add a custom pulldown field to create account page?

Help, please! I am tempted to go back to my client and say it is too hard to add custom fields for "Industry" and "Job" to the create account page. Am I right or is there a way? I managed to create a table in my database for industry, but figuring out how to get a pulldown menu in the right place is killing me. Would anyone be able to help out / advise?
