Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

I have installed XAMPP for windows on my local office computer. Firewall is enabled BUT it allows XAMPP to run and have opened up the ports necessary for Apache, MySQL and mail servers to run (80,3306,25,110)

When I open the control panel. Only Filezilla is working, all the rest when I click on it it says busy. I don't have any old copies of Mysql or Apache.

When I click on port checking, it shows that the ports are free.

Our office has a main server but I didnot install it there. I have installed it in my own computer c:.

Anybody has any idea how to fix this? Help is much appreciated THanks!

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Which version of XAMPP are you using and what directory did you install XAMPP into?

Are you looking to have a local development install?

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Yes I am. I wanted to install it in our office c drive so that we can experiment on it before moving the files to a live site.

I seem to think that you can't install it on a computer that has some network system becuase I was able to successfully install it on my home computer which is stand alone. Is that correct?

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

You would have to ask your sys admin about this as it does take control of a few ports

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

  1. If you have Skype installed then be aware that Skype uses Port 80, unless you set it not to use that port.

  2. If this is a Windows PC then is it using XP Pro? If it is then Windows (IIS) Server will be pre-installed and you'll either need to get rid of it or else configure XAMPP to use a different port (8080).

  3. Have you set MySQL and Apache to run as services on the PC (meaning they'll start automatically when the PC is booted)? You do this from the apache and myql folders by clicking on the relevant _installservice.bat file.

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Try disabling the default Windows firewall besides your third-party firewall and see if your Apache/MySQL is able to start properly. This will make sure its not the firewall (or some misconfiguration) that is causing the problem.

As a security measure, you might want to temporarily disconnect your network cable while your antivirus and firewalls are disabled.

You might also ask your office tech support staff, esp since they may have an idea of what's special about your office computer vs your home computer as it relates to what you're trying to do.

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Thank you guys for all your advice. I found my answer on a forum for Apache Forum. Thread is here in case someone else has the same installation problems like me:

http://www.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopic.php?t=29581

Essentially, these are the steps I took before it started to run:

  1. Disconnect from the network server
  2. Disable AVGFree
  3. Do what the lady at the forum said:

so here is a quick work around that may help you out... 1.. make sure that the services for all the apps are un-installed by de-selecting them using the controller. 2...rename your xampp folder to say xampp1 and run the setup.bat in the folder... this should trigger a screen with the 'do you want to do this' and tell it to go ahead... then try to run apache (without services) from the controller... let me know...

Apache then started for me and reinstalled for Windows NT!

Now everything runs!! :smartalec:

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Hey I just realized that you are the author of the Zen e-book!! wow! I just got the book and it's great! I had my reservations before I got them, but now I'm a great fan and always keep it by me for easy reference. I definitely recommend it for old and new Zenners.

Do you plan on doing a revised edition for Zen 1.3.8a? Or are there not a lot on the upgrade to merit this?

Also, I used the old version of XAMPP but installed the new Zen on it 1.3.8a. So far it is working...but do you know of any compatibility problems with it?

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Thank you. I'm glad the book was of help to you .

There is a free PDF update (covering changes from 1.3.7.1 to 1.3.8a) to the book which is available at the book's support site (see my sig). Just click the "Updates" link in the "Book Support" side-box and follow the instructions from there.

There are some issues depending on which latest XAMPP versions you are using. You can find out more about them by doing a search of the forums.

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

After initially not starting at all, I started Apache and Mysql successfully using the tips from Decostyle and thought I had this problem nailed. However, the next day I tried again and couldn't get anything to run. I'm using Windows XP Pro on an office PC where I work.

Mercury mail starts just fine every time.

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

I was able to start Apache by going to C:\program files\xampp\apache\bin and clicking on apachemonitor.

However, I still can't figure out how to get Mysql to start.

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

I found that I could then click "svc" next to Mysql in the XAMPP control panel and then Mysql would run.

Gack, I hope I learn quicker on the rest of the setup!

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Your problems with getting XAMPP set up are just part of turning your computer into a webserver. A live webserver where you buy hosting space has already done all that for you ... that's what you pay them for. :D

Note that XAMPP is only used to let you attempt to run Zen Cart on your own PC instead of doing it on a live webserver.

If you have a real webserver hosting account, you don't need to do all the XAMPP setup on your PC to get a website running live.

The XAMPP is only useful for testing things without touching a live site.

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

Per my comments above, I did get the Xampp control panel to show that Apache, Mysql, and Mercury were running. However, the browser could never find the http:\localhost URL after the first day.

What changed? I don't know, but that was yesterday and I've jacked with this all day to no avail. Reloaded, reset, turned things on and off, and whatever else I thought might make it work. It seems very close, but just isn't gonna make it to the next level.

I'm trying to follow the book, but at this rate all of my potential customers will die of old age before I go live!

So I should just skip all of the local baloney and just set this up on my live site?

Re: Can't get XAMPP Apache and Mysql to run

XAMPP has always worked fine for me whenever I've installed it.

vfrazier:

Yes, that may be a good step. Then later you can spend some time working on your local webserver to use as a test area after you've gone live.

It's always wise to have a test area to play in when preparing to install addons or upgrades or even fiddling with some settings ... when you don't want to break the live site with something you're not familiar with yet.

Many use XAMP or WAMP and insist on having mail on a test bed -

I use easyphp locally and only for testing/design - you might try it
