2 Products Sideboxes.. Possible? Help Please

At the moment i have the 'products' sidebox with all my products in under different categories, but what i'm wanting to do is add another 'products' sidebox under the one that's there at the moment and have the same products in it but listed under different categories. It's so that the customer can search via product type, original sidebox, or car type, new sidebox.

Is this possible and if so how as i'm getting no where.

For two categories sideboxes, you can use the Documents box by limiting some categories to document-general product type, then adding product-general to the allowed types. This has been discussed at length in the forum; look around, and I'll try to check in later.

From what i've read it looks like if i make a new 'catergorie' and set it's restrictions to document general and product general it will automatically put it in another sidebox. I don't know if this is right and haven't been able to test it as i don't know where to find the restrictions.

Right i've managed to do it but now i need to change the title from 'Documents' to 'Search By Car Type' and also from 'Products' to 'Search By Product Type'. Can anyone help please?

This is where you use the Developers Toolkit (in admin > Tools).

Paste the text, like Documents, into the bottom left box, select all catalog files and search. Among the results will be the file and line number where that text is defined, and you can edit that file and change it. You might try the top left box if you want to limit the search to language files.

Yeah i've done that and sorted the documents one but when i put products in there loads of things come up and can't see anywhere where the one i need to change is.

It should probably be in the same file as the "Documents" text was.

If you use the top box, it will only search the language definition files, and you can do a trial like changing one by one to ProductsXXXXXX to find the right define.

'scuse me for jumping in here but, wouldn't it be more productive to have an "Items by Vehicle" category in the regular categories?

Under that would be sub-categories of Ford, Chevy, etc with the linked products from mufflers, taillights, etc.

First off, the customer wouldn't need to go to another box. Secondly, any change to a linked product will change all.

The products can be linked whether they appear in the same box or different boxes. I agree that the same kind of effects can be gotten with just the categories box (unless the second box is wanted to be in the other sidebar), especially when using the capabilities of Categories Dressing for extra headings.

Right, i've now got two 'products sideboxes' and I'm wondering if it's possible to have 3? I can only seem to manage to get 2 but would be great if i could get the third, any help would be much appreciated.

For three actual sideboxes, you will need to do some custom coding and create a brand-new sidebox - see the "Parent Categories in Three Sideboxes" thread.

For the appearance of separate boxes, you can use the latest version of Categories Dressing.
