Can Image Handler occupy cpu too much?

Is Image Handler a must ? If my site have many picture, can Image Handler afford big traffic webiste? IH2 is realtime resize picture or resize one time?

It caches the image resize in a file cache

It is not Zen Cart supplied but a contribution by a 3rd party.

Many use it to keep from having to create 3 images at different sizes.

So I guess it is use it at your option
