Different Buttons for Different Products

Is it possible to add different buttons to different product categories? I've been looking around and can't figure out how this would be done.

If you go to the event sign-up page, you'll come to a page that is intended to allow people to register for an event. I'll soon be adding a section for merchandise to raise money and for these items, I'll want the "add to cart button". However, for the event registration items, I'd like to use a button that says "Register".

If the items are setup as different product categories, can you change the buttons? I'd also really like to get rid of that text next to each text box if possible.

For the differences that you are seeking the way to accomplish this is to create a new product type and define there what and how it will be displayed.

By default, there are 3 types installed with the installation, general, document and music. You can look at these form the admin side as well as the front end to see the differences and then decide what you want and build it.
