Right column and breadcrumbs

I moved my breadcrumbs to the tpl_header as my design required that they be aligned left above the category navigation. I still want the background color for my right column to extend to the top immediately below the category tabs. I have tried a bunch of different things without success (width of the breadcrumbs, z-index of either the breadcrumbs or the right column). I even tried to create a background image with the 150px wide to the right of the color to fill in that space. No luck (in safari and ie the background doesn't align with the column like it does in firefox). Any other ideas?

with Bread crumbs inside the header one can not affect a width adjustment that will work as the container is now the headerwrapper and that has to span the width

Any ideas why if I put a right aligned background in the breadcrumbs style in safari and ie the width is too narrow but in firefox it is fine?
