tpl_categories.php : any way to show all subcategories site-wide?

I want the sidebox menu to display the parent and subcategories all the time, on every page. I am basically looking for a way to dumb-down the code if at all possible.

I've played around in the tpl_categories.php but have had no luck. Is there an on/off switch somewhere or do i need a module?

My apologies if I have just overlooked the obvious.

There is an on/off switch actually.

I believe it is in your Admin in Configuration->Layout Settings->Categories - Always Open to Show SubCategories.

Set it to 1.

Tried that...doesn't work though for what I need to do. According to the e-Start Zen Cart Manual (p157) that switch functions as follows:

"Always Open to Show SubCategories
If enabled, it tells Zen Cart to show the sub-category that is holding the currently displayed product. If it is disabled, you will always see the top-most categories no matter which product you are currently viewing in a sub-category."

What I need to do is show all the subcategories no matter what page I am viewing. I basically want to turn off the collapsible nature of the Categories Side-Box and have it display like this on all the pages of the site.

Hmmn... Well let me look around then. I'm pretty sure categories on my site are listing how you want (eventhough they are in a dropdown menu).

The same issue is happening to me with a new site I am building. Strange, because I don't recall having this problem on previous sites. I verified and double checked that I have "Categories - Always Show on Main Page" selected. Not sure what might be missing or what other setting I might have set that is overriding this?

I didn't install that mod cited above on another site I recently completed, and it is displaying all categories and subcats on the left at all times, including the main page of the site. This new site is the same ZenCart version (1.3.8) yet it is adament to show only the top category level on the index page and only open with subcats when you are browsing the store items.

I have installed it...but, it's not working for me. No sign of it on my site.

The only sign of install instructions are in the read_me file:

"Update: if you don't want this sidebox to show on the home page - use the file named category_list_box.php_no_index_page - just change the name to category_list_box.php"

I am stumped.

Wow I don't blame you for being stumped...I'll see If I can figure this thing out...

The first one (Category Listing Box) is screwy and although it seems some people have had success with it (maybe older versions of ZC?). I was unsuccessful and couldn't get it to work even after messing with the directory structure.

But...this one seems to be A-OK! :
