Customer Accounts free items

Hi, I have tried finding the answer on my own here, but either I don't ask the right way in search or the answer isn't there. Most of what I found was dated 2006.

So, here is my question and sorry if I missed the answer in another thread.

I have an embroidery design site. I offer free designs to customers, I would like to allow customers to download the free designs with the option to either create an account or not create one. I'm sure this probably isn't the best move as a business person since I will lose the option to send them newsletters if they choose to not create an account. But there are so many embroidery people out there that only want free designs and won't download if they have to register. I know I use to be one of them.

I only want this option of creating an account on free downloads, is there a way to do this?

WOW I can't believe no one here knows the answer to this :shocking:. I really need to figure this out, I see I get a lot of traffic to my site, but the registrations don't reflect the same numbers.

Since your freebies are in their own category, what you seem to want to do is limit 'checkout without account' to just that category. I doubt if that's possible.

You'll need to search for COWOA and peruse the threads to be sure, though.

My recommendation would be to use newsletter discount (see download section) to discount these products to 0 for newsletter subscribers. Who cares that people will resist creating an account to get a free download - these people aren't your target market anyway. Make them create an account and sign up for the newsletter to get your offerings.
