I finally set up my first downloadable product. I did this:

Configuration > Attribute Settings:

• Downloads Controller Update Status Value: 4
• Downloads Controller Order Status Value >= lower value: 2
• Downloads Controller Order Status Value <= upper value: 4

Modules > Payment:

• Check/Money Order [edit]
• True (for now...)
• Payment Zone: none
• Set Order Status: Delivered [2]
• Sort order of display: 0
• Make Payable to: My Store

Previously, when 'Set Order Status' was set to 'Processing', the test customer would be allowed to download only when the store admin changed the order status (manually) to 'Processing'.

But now, when it is set to 'Delivered', it allows download IMMEDIATELY after test customer's submission. Why?

Eventually, I would like to reach a configuration in which Money Order payment option is disabled, and the download is enabled only upon automatic confirmation from PayPal or Authorize.net. However, since I don't want to do tests with real transactions on PayPal/Authorize.net at the moment, I am deferring payment setup until I finish entire store configuration.

I would appreciate any tips or insights regarding the above.

If you set the Orders Status and it falls within the range:

Downloads Controller Order Status Value >= lower value: 2

Downloads Controller Order Status Value <= upper value: 4

then the Download is immediately available ...

Pending (orders_status 1) would make it so that the Store Owner must approve an Order first, such as Check/Money Order ...

Processing (orders_status 2) would make it an automatic approval for things like PayPal or Credit Cards ...

Delivered (orders_status 3) would also make it an automatic approval for things like PayPal or Credit Cards ...

Updated (orders_status 4) is used to release the Download again, for example ...

Thank you, Ajeh. Indeed my mistake was that I set the Order Status too high for Check/Money Order. I changed it back to Pending and now it works as expected.

I now have a follow up question that was inspired by your reply:

What is the difference, then, between those two? Why would I prefer, for PayPal, Processing over Delivered (or vice versa)?

That is your preference and decision to make ...

Some sites sell both Downloadable Products and Physical Products, so Processing is a better "sounding" setting ... there "may be" another step to finalizing the order, such as shipping out the Physical Products on the Order ...

Some sites sell only Downloadable Products and there really isn't a Processing ... so Delivered is a better "sounding" setting ... there isn't another step to finalizing the order ...
