image on main page only

I am trying to put an image on the main page only. I want it in the center column.
I am working on a remote server,MAMP. I think the file on need to change is tpl_main_page.php. I am not sure where on this template I can insert the image.
Please if someone can tell me the correct code to use.
In the admin area, under define pages editor this main page template is not there.

admin > tools > defines page editor > select main_page.php

Well it should be unless you have deleted it

Grab a distribution of the same version as you have installed - expand it locally and then with your FTP client compare the /includes/lannguages/english/html_includes folders and transfer any that are missing

I did manage to get the image on the main page. When it appeared it was thumbnail size. Is it correct to resize it by going to configuration then images?
I changed subcategory image width and height.

Images entered into the main_page.php area are not subject to the Zen Cart image settings....

I am also having a problem putting an image in the right column sidebox. I want to change the stylesheet to do this. I went thru the forum and I tried everything.
The image still will not appear.
The image I made will be the buttons for the catergories. I designed my own image for this.
I spent hours on this to no avail. What should I do?
Please tell me where on the stylesheet I should put the image code.
