Out of Stock or products_status 0 do not show in the Catalog ...
You can configure your Stock to track stock and set the products_status to 1 when the quantity goes to <= 0 and show the Sold Out vs the Add to Cart or the Buy Now ...
NOTE: Products currently set to products_status 0 will need to manually be changed either one by one or globally if all should be changed ...

Go to the Configuration ... Stock ... and look at all of the choices you have there and see what would work best for your needs ...

Did you test this on an existing Product?
Current Products marked as products_status 0 will remain as products_status 0 even when you change these settings ...
It is on the completion of new orders that you will see the difference and the Product will now remain in the Catalog but marked as Sold Out when the products_quantity is <= 0 ...
For the other Products already set to products_status = 0, these will remain hidden or not active ... if you set them to products_status = 1, then they will show as Sold Out ...

You are losing me now ... :blink:
Do you want your Products, as they become Sold Out to show as Sold Out in the Catalog or to be removed from the Catalog when the Order is completed?

Thank you for this answer.
I too wanted out of stock items to show (clearly stating "out of stock" and unable to add to the shopping cart).
Under Stock I had changed "Products status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to" from 0 to 1 to no avail, then the penny dropped with your post, #3. I had to go back to the item I wanted to show as out of stock and enable it again! As this was a retrospective change, ZenCart had done as it had been set up to do and disabled the truely out of stock item.
Whooppee! It works.

This option is awesome. I use to use the option up the top to make it "out of stock" but it removed the items and when people found the product say in Google they would get a "page not found" notice.
So I enabled this option, it allows me to keep the item showed, plus adding the "notifity when product in stock" works a dream

I tried doing as suggested above and this is still not working for the site. Site is northernthreads.net/shop/
Version is 1.3.8, and the setting
Products status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to
is set to: 1 (on).
What is happening is anytime the 'out of stock' option is selected in the product editing screen, the product is automatically set to "disabled" (red) and taken offline. I have tried creating a totally new product with test info and setting it to out of stock, still works the same. I have tried turning another product back on and then editing it again to out of stock, still goes disabled/offline.
Unless I am missing something, this feature does not seem to be working at all. Should I be looking at another setting? Do I need to have the entire catalog reuploaded in EZPopulate? (please god no)

Out of Stock means ... products_status = 0 ... which means ... do NOT show in the Catalog with or without products_quantity of 0 ...
Don't Disable the Product by setting it to Out of Stock, products_status = 0, unless you really want it NOT to show in the Catalog ...
To show as Sold Out, leave it set to In Stock or products_status = 1 ...
When the products_quantity <= 0 and you have it set to show as Sold Out and you have Stock tracking on and Set Product Status to 1 ... you will still see the Product in the Catalog when it sells out but you will not be able to buy it as the add to cart and buy now etc. change to Sold Out ...

Ok, thank you for clarifying. I think I understand now. I will tell the website owner that they need to consider turning on the inventory/stock tracking feature.

ok I have a little different issue. On my site i do not subtract from inventory items when they are sold. I only dropship items. But thru my supplier, sometimes items go out of stock on their end.
So...I would like the ability to ONLY mark the product out of stock and that item still show up...not as disabled.
I tried a bunch of different things, but so far none have worked. I think my issue is because I dont subtract from a specific number. All my items have a QOH of '0' at all times on the admin side.
So how do i just show item as out of stock when that is all it really is?

Is it possible to change all of your "in stock" items that you are not tracking to a very high number (like 10000) so they will continue to say "in stock" and then enable tracking? You can then set those few items that are really back ordered to 0?

Okay I have Globally set this to 1
Show Products when out of stock
0= set product status to OFF
1= leave product status ON
Now when my items sell out they are still turning off. Is this because the item was created before I globally changed to "1= leave product status ON"?
If so, how do I change my already created products to "1= leave product status ON"?
Thanks
Oba-san
When you use 1= leave product status ON, this means that the products_status will no longer be changed to 0 on new orders where the products_quantity is <= 0 ...
However, as you are correctly concluding, this does not change the current products_status of your Products already set to products_status 0 ...
If ALL Products should now have a products_status 1, you can fix this ...
I would backup your database first, and then you can run the SQL statement:
UPDATE products SET products_status = 1;
If you have your Sold Out setting
Show Sold Out Image in place of Add to Cart
Show Sold Out Image instead of Add to Cart Button0= off
1= on
turned ON, then Products with a quantity of less than or equal to 0 with have the Sold Out rather than the Add to Cart/Buy Now ...

like wise for some reason my products were showing up on 0 when i didnt want them to - (I think you said you had to manually switch them off?)
Products status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to 0 - Products still showing??? Why?
I did this
UPDATE products SET products_status = 0 where products_quantity <= 0 as a temporary fix...
Oba-san
This only will change the setting for products_status = 0 when a new order is made, not on old, existing Products that have the products_quantity of 0 ...
