Registration & Login questions

A few questions this morning -

1. When a user attempts to buy something from my cart it works fine until they hit "submit" on a new-user registration. That auto-redirects them to a blank page, although the page source seems to indicate that there would be something zen-cart related on it normally. Any thoughts on what might cause that, or what files I would check to figure out why it's not working?

2. Is there a way to remove the date-of-birth field from user registration, or at least make it not a required field?

(it does redirect me to ndex.php?main_page=create_account, but that page appears blank)

Admin -> Config -> Customer Details
